Animation is Taking the Edge Off of Political Correctness - Laughing At Ourselves Considered

Generally speaking animation and cartoons help us reflect and laugh at ourselves, not taking things so seriously, and generally that is a good thing right? Surely, consider the Dilbert Series if you will. Still, sometimes folks can't take a little joke, and throw a fit, for instance the Danish Cartoonist who showed the "Great Allah" in less than a favorable light, and had people rioting throughout the world of Islam and calling for his head.

The other day, there was an interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal which discussed "self-mockery" and "commentary" with the use of animated videos on YouTube and in the Media. The article was titled; "Animation Nation" with a subtitle of "Quickly Generated and Produced Computer Cartoons Bring Forth Millions of Views Online" and then the article noted the benefits for advertisers and the tremendous number of advertising executives, corporate marketing departments, and famous Hollywood animation movie programmers were more than intrigued and indeed, planning more.

While many of the jokes are and animation characters out there do a good job of laughing at all the sound and fury throughout our society and civilization, animators must be careful not to offend or be willing to take the heat when they do. Take "Family Guy" for instance, heck they make fun of everyone, me and my own family heritage included, which is fine since they spread the wealth so to speak. Nevertheless, we must not forget the purpose of cartoon or political animation, or the often emailed, yet seldom spoken critique on stereotypical observations.

Over all, animation can do a very good job with such things, and we should be using it more often, rather than getting all angry across political, ethnic, generational, and economic class lines. It serves no real purpose to getting overly upset to no avail. But if we are to impose political correctness on cartoons, and animation, then we will fail to get the maximum benefits from the world's best animators and cartoonists.

Specifically, as the coordinator for a think tank, these issues often come up, and it has been our contention that we should use all the tools in the animator's toolkit to help us better understand ourselves. Animation: The Subconsciousness of Our Imagination

After a hundred years of it discovery, animation has opened a new doorway for writers, directors, and producers in the art of story-telling. Before, most stories were told in the form of verbal or written words and pictures. However, the creation of live film also opened the door way for story telling as well, but even live film has its limits.

In the early stages of live film, it proved to be somewhat difficult to film something out of the ordinary. Such as a man lifting a 2 ton truck, a man flying, or even a talking animal. However, the art of animation allowed story tellers to explain and express the unimaginable, and yet still captivate their audience into believing that what they're seeing may actually be, real.

Many of us watch cartoons and/or anime to escape from the limits of reality. Sure in the real world we have our limits, we as human may never evolve to fly or understand what our pets are saying to us but, in another world, a world where everything seem so visually expressive and real, we are able to experience the limitations of our world. Even though we subconsciously know that the world we're watching isn't real, we manage to somehow connect and establish ourselves in it.

As it stands, no other form of art except animation allows us to build through that connection of connotative thinking. Sure, what we may experience from cartoons or Japanese anime is all in our heads but even then if we convince our brains that the subject we're seeing is real, then it must be real right? Besides most of the things we believe in is a subject matter, which means you either believe it, or not.

Today, the popularity of cartoon and Japanese anime is increasing and not only in kids or in limited demographics. Parents and foreign cultures are sitting back and watching animation at home or in theaters. No longer are the days of where animated shows were for kids only or for certain demographic region of the world.

Why? Simple. The expansion of televised animation has led to a variety of genres that are now available for just about every type of person, whether you're the science fiction fan, the drama fan, the action fan, or the comedy fan, there is animation for that.

But it doesn't stop there, animation is now a part of all cultures. Now days there are many animated films that are based of various folklore, history, or societies from all around the world, by which again opens up a wider audience to view.

But of course animation is a general form of art. Many like to break it down and refer to either one or two other common types of animations, cartoons or anime. These two forms are most specific and common, with each providing different styles of art and origins. Of course by origins, I mean one is from the west as cartoons and the other from the east specifically Japan as anime.

However, getting into great length about these two animation forms requires a post of their own.

But one thing is certain, even though animation is probably the youngest form of art, it's certainly the becoming the most popular and mainstream form of story-telling.

With its vast growing popularity, reaching over hundreds of millions of fans and viewers, animation has changed the art of story telling itself and along with it, allowed us to escape from pressures and limitations of the real world, even if it's for only thirty minutes.

So You Want to Do Animation

Our stomachs have churned as we have threaded a narrow canyon, escaping intergalactic spaceships manned by angry aliens, or jumped when a fantastical creature rears his head. We may even have experienced such visceral physical changes such as hot flashes during explosions or vertigo plummeting unknown depths. Our emotional selves have been touched by lovable characters and angered by those who perpetrate.

And now you want to render your hand at this increasingly accessible art form- to get out a story line, to create something yourself and perhaps to cause- if only for a moment- your viewer to suspend disbelief.

Animation is a hot field. With such animation giants such as Pixar and DreamWorks leading the pace, we have all been inspired by recent developments. Whether you desire to compete with the professionals or to use an animation process for your own use, hobby or story line, there have also been recent developments and programs which make doing animation accessible to all.

There are two fundamental components to producing your own animation:

1. Creativity

2. Technical Ability

If you feel you fall short in either of these areas, don't panic, many modern developments have made your concerns easily surmountable.

Whether you consider yourself such or not, computer animators are artists. It all begins with creative vision. The possibilities are infinite- limited only by the animator's imagination. For many, this may be a little intimidating. However, look around you. If you can tell a story verbally to another, then you can create a story line suitable for animation. Perhaps it is a how-to which would clarify a process or idea you have in your mind. Perhaps it is a favorite story that you have read elsewhere or been handed down through generations. Whatever your story line, jot it down. What is the premise? What is the beginning and the end? Who (what) are the primary characters? If you come to this point in your inquiry, continue. If you don't have an idea, select something simple... perhaps a dog scratching at a flea or as simple a movement sequence as a flower opening... and trust that the technical development and mastery will open unlimited possibilities. The important thing is to start.

?The second key element then of course is the technology. Where, you might ask, should you begin? There are a number of software packages out there which address just this field but which is the best and where to begin? Many "free" software packages are available and some have extensive communities for support. Some of the major packages, such as Maya, 3D Max and Poser Pro are fantastic but the costs may be prohibitive to an entry level animator. One package we have been especially excited by is Blender with a low entry fee, in depth tutorials and a 60 day trial offer.

That said, we all learn differently and are more comfortable with different interfaces so try some out. Basically, you will want your selected program to be manageable by you and, depending on your skill set going into this, a user friendly interface. As for output, review the prospective software in terms of your desired output. Do you need 3D modeling for more realistic visions or capable of cartoon animation or game creation? Many packages do all these but perhaps not all equally.

3D Vs 2D: Shrek Vs Bugs Bunny - The Introduction of Realism in Animation

In the beginning there were cartoons, 2D cartoons.

In my youth I used to be a 'Professional Cartoon Watcher'. I used to watch everything and anything- I think it's reflected in my 3D work today- but I must note that my patterns started to change after the release of Toy Story- the very first one. Part of it was changing opinions in my head but could it also have something to do with the fact that it was in 3D?

I now ask the question: Are 3D cartoons/films better than 2D cartoons/films?

3D and all it has to give:

I think what 3D animated cartoons and films brought to the world of 'Toon' is realism. Suddenly facial features and skin textures became more defined. It became possible to have a character with as much detail as even having individual strands of hair.Everything had more depth- was richer, characters became more human- easier to relate to.The production process was also far quicker- no more frame by frame animating.

The best 3D animation software( and frankly most) have got a thing called 'Tweening' - which comes from the word 'between' - you can set a start and an end point for your animation and then - the software will calculate and process and fill in the rest. Of course animators still want to have control over their character's motions but no more is it truly a frame by frame process. It actually hasn't been for a long time as most 2D production houses now also use software which can do the 'Tweening" for them.

I believe 3D made animation 'human' whilst before it was frankly a 'super human' affair for those with dedication and patience (I have a lot of respect for all traditional 2D animators. Try DRAWING 25 images for 1 second of animation- now let's make a Disney Feature film.)

This is not to say 3D animation is easy- but it most certainly has it's shortcuts. I would actually say I think character creation in 3D is harder than for 2D. In 2D you can have Charlie Brown in all his simple line art glory as your main character - while with 3D there is always that push for realism- and the added depth means that your character needs to look good and just as good from all sides.

Suddenly where detailed folds in clothing were a bit impractical in 2D cartoons- in 3D, you almost need those folds to make you stand out from the last Pixar film and once you add that fold in- you now have to take into consideration Physics- how is your character moving- what do you want the folds to do as he/she moves....once the realism starts it's hard to end.

3D computer animation software is a system whereby animated images are generated using the graphics of your computer. The generalized term of computer generated imagery uses both dynamic and static objects.

We use what is called persistence of vision to make objects appear to move or change shape, if we supply the retina of the eye with different images at a fast rate we can then create the illusion of movement, this image replacement rate is roughly twenty-fifth of a second.

2D graphics
Is an image generated by the computer mainly from two-dimensional models, e.g. text, digital images? Painting and drawing were the original methods of producing images also including things such as, typography, cartography, technical drawing, advertising etc.

Vector Graphics
Is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, curves, lines, shapes etc.

Wire Frame Model
A wire frame model is a visual presentation of a three dimensional or physical object used in 3D computer graphics.

Raster Graphics
Is an image commonly called a bitmap, is the data structure of that image and is how the computer displays that image on our monitors.

Rendering
This is the process of applying shading and texturing of an image.

These are just a few of the terms you will come across in 3D computer animation, more in depth descriptions can be found elsewhere on the internet, the best place I have found is Wikipedia.

Choosing an animation program to use and learn with if you are just starting can be difficult and expensive if you get it wrong. Some programs cost hundreds of dollars and more and have all the facilities you require but are mainly for advance users with little help for the beginner. There is also available free to use programs but again the opposite applies and not all the features you may require are available in them.

Computer Animation - Best Programs For Animation Design

My interest in animation started in October 2009 following the inheritance of a significant stock of pipe cleaners. My father a man in his dotage and content with retirement by habit took a volume of Sherlock Holmes, an ample glass of single malt and a churchwarden briar stuffed with old shag into the comfy chair of an afternoon before falling asleep by the fire, little did he know that the by product of his muse would account for many hours of his sons time and lead to a hobby of personal exploration and enjoyment that is not only compulsive but at times mentally stimulating to the extreme.

My start point was simple, as when a boy I fashioned the pipe cleaners into the semblance of human form and encouraged the models to stand upright by using office tack, then with felt tip I drew a backdrop of a bar room and proceeded with the aid of a basic computer camera to act out the story line of a colourful old tune, The Stranger in Blue Suede Shoes, by Kevin Ayres.

The camera came ready with its own snapshot program which I linked up with the free version of Windows Video Maker then dragged and dropped the music which was saved into Windows Media Player, the results of this first effort can still be viewed on You tube and have received a number of positive comments.

Two more musical efforts followed, on the later, Blue Xmas by Miles Davies, I added in the use of a new software program "Adobe Photoshop" which is superbly flexible at importing a photograph to change, move by layers or distort in various ingenious ways and then you can even add in lighting effects and much more, my list being in no way exhaustive.

Your purchases may well stop there if your needs are only simple, however I find by nature that once started an unseen force pulls me ever forward to find that one next stage of progression and so dissatisfied with the accuracy of mouse drawing I next invested in a Wacon Intros 4 drawing tablet, I nearly went for the larger of the three size options but in hindsight for compatibility to my needs I find the medium version ideal.

Later I then stumbled on to a software sale and picked up a copy of "Serif Video Studio" which although simple by design I found it more flexible than Windows Video Maker and even a dozen plus videos on I still use this programme as my base to bring forward all developed scenes into.

Music with Windows XP or earlier versions was a simple click of a button job but upon upgrade to Windows 7 I found many such tasks becoming a little less user friendly and so now I work through an "Audio Lab Cleaning" program which is wonderfully simple when cuts, breaks and sound bites are needed.

But my latest purchase and by far the most revolutionary to my style was the bonus pack of " Reallusion Iclone4 and CrazyTalk6.Pro" without a doubt this is the most fabulous of programmes for an enthusiastic amateur like me, try some of my latest efforts on You tube to recognise the difference, these programmes let you work with real 3D animated characters just like in Disney the only barriers being your computers capabilities and your own time and imagination, I believe it is worth paying a little bit more to get the "Pro" rather than "Standard" packages of these programmes because the add-ons and upgrades are much more comprehensive and worth every penny.

So there you have it, if you want to step a toe onto this wonderful Jack and the Beanstalk ladder of animation then this is one do it yourself way that I can recommend.

Mecha Animation of Today Represents War in the Future

Today, we are very much aware that animation is taking a big part in the entertainment industry especially those anime that illustrating gigantic robots or what we called as mecha animation. This anime that features mechanical robots with amazing technical capacities used for fight scenes hook the interest of the kids but as generation gone by adults and experts took interest to this type of anime as well. Example of this anime is Neon Genesis Evangelion, Code Geass and the very popular Gundam Series. Not just the fight scenes and the robots that makes it appealing to the viewers but as well as the characters or the pilots of each robots that were illustrated as kids aging from 13 to 16 years old, we can even barely call them teenagers.

My point in this article is that can this be a glimpse of what will happen in the future? It is not a secret to us that many inventors, scientist and experts in high-technology are eager to discover and even create weapons to help the government protect its country and its people from sudden attacks. Come to think of this, if ever they could really create weaponry such us those gigantic robots we saw on this anime having those monstrous capacities to abolish an entire island, having kids as a pilot for this robots is not impossible to happen as well.

I am not against mecha animation or even new developments or discoveries engaging to create new technologies to help the people for their everyday life, I am just a mere citizen sharing my thoughts of observation of what might happen if this will be the situation in the future. Life is beautiful to waste; we should not create a more cruel life to those people who are already in the war zone or to those who are already engaged in the battlefield.

Today, there are a lot of computers available for sale that come with generous amounts of disk space and internal memory. A decent computer can be found for $1000 or less. If you're serious about making animations, you'll really want to invest in a good computer.

Next, you're going to need 3D animation software. If this is your very first time creating an animation, you probably don't want to spend a lot of money on the software. There are some software programs, like GIMP, that are free to download and will allow you to make basic animations. If you're really serious about learning how to make an animation, you're going to want spend a little money on a better program. The free programs are good to experiment with, but they lack the functionality of a full-blown 3D animation software program.

There are many paid software programs available for 3D animation including Maya, Adobe Flash, 3D Max and Poser. These are all excellent programs and represent some of the industry standard software used by huge companies like Pixar. Unfortunately, these programs are incredibly expensive - literally costing thousands of dollars. Not only that, but once you've installed the program, you'll have to figure out how to use it. While these programs all work well, they're not really conducive to a beginning animator.

A Definition Of Anime And Japanese Animation

A definition of anime could be described as animation originating from Japan. It can mean different things depending on its context but in English speaking countries this is the commonly accepted term.

It is both hand drawn and computer generated and has been around since around 1917. The popular version we are familiar with today began to originate in the early nineteen sixties. It began to expand outside of japan in the early nineteen eighties. Anime and its cousin manga have grown in popularity in the United States and other countries exponentially.

In Japan the term is not intended to define an animations country of origination instead, it is a generic term that is used to refer to all forms of animation from all countries. The term derives from an abbreviation of the word animation. Cartoons from other nations that use Japan's popular style are usually referred to as "anime-influenced animation" it is typical for the uneducated viewer to refer to these series as Japanimation.

Those who are not Japanese might refer to the countries animation as, "Japanimation", but this phrase is no longer used.."Japanimation" was used the most during the seventies and eighties, but the term "anime" replaced it eventually. Since the term does not identify the cartoons origin Japanese usage, "Japanimation" is used to distinguish Japanese work from that of other countries

The Japanese term manga may refer either to comic books or animation.However English speakers refer to "manga" as Japanese comics.. The phrase "ani-manga" is typically used to refer to comic books produced from animation cells.

Even though different series and different artists have their own particular styles, many of the elements have become so common that most describe them as typical of the art in general. This does not mean though however that all the cartoons will share the same artistic style. Many will have a quite varied style from what would commonly be called "anime style", yet people still use the term to refer to these titles. The most typical form of anime features could include exaggerated features like large eyes, overblown hair and disproportionate limbs... Also shaped speech bubbles or speed lines.

The biggest factor in anime exposure outside Japan has been due to the internet.. Before the nineties, the art form had very little exposure beyond the borders of its home.
